There are certain breeds of dogs that are better suited to this type of training than others. Without doubt, our first choice of dog would be a German Shepherd/Belgium Shepherd (Mali) but others can make the grade.
All dogs (whether our own or our customers) sent for training undergo assessment to determine their suitability prior to receiving this training. This assessment tests not only the dogs courage but also its temperament; an even temperament is in my belief the key to a good personal protection dog.
Following training of the dog, the existing or new owner is put through a handover course where they will be taught the fundamentals of dog handling. In the case of someone purchasing a trained dog from us, it acts as an introduction to their new dog and a chance for the dog and handler to start the bonding process.
The handler is shown how to utilise the dogs training to its best advantage and is taught how to control the dog in many different scenarios. In addition to field work and training with the dog, the handler will also be coached in the basics of dog ownership i.e. feeding & exercise requirements etc.
This is also the time when the do's and don'ts of owning a dog trained in this way are discussed. We believe that this handover period is of paramount importance both to dog and handler.
PPD owners must also have a duty of care owning a PPD dog. They will be obligated to have regular training and assessment with their dogs in terms of control and protection work . until such time it is considered safe within responsible ownership. within the contract of sale.
Please not we will not train or supply a protection dog to any person who has not
gone though our vetting process! (this could include a home visit and reference checks)
